I believe blockchain can be utilised in the area of governmental elections, both nationally and locally. While this is not 100% original, I feel it has yet to be developed fully, although several countries are making progress in this regard. Decentralisation is necessary as it removes any central point of control - which could be vulnerable to interferance. As examples - the recent American mid-term elections where boxes of ballot papers turned up in various locations, and the independence referendum in Catalunya where police were ordered to seize ballot boxes. Transparency is a key factor, and could help prevent any confusion after the event, or eliminate the possibility of corruption or interferance. To be successful, blockchain alone is not sufficient. The hardware used for voting is also critical and would need to be secured sufficiently to make tampering impossible. The blockchain used would need to be capable of handling high transaction speeds. For this reason, a platform such as Ethereum would not be suitable as it would lead to bottlenecks in the network. A blockchain such as EOS may be suitable as it has proven it's ability to handle almost 4000 transactions per second. Another advantage could be in distributing the results, e.g. to news agencies, etc. Once the results are on the blockchain, they are visible for anybody to view, which should lead to faster news reports and clarity of data. Lastly, there is a permanent record on a decentralised blockchain, which prevents accidental loss. On a local level, blockchain, and dapps, could be used to increase citizens involvement with local government issues. One example of this is the ClearPoll dapp, where users can create or vote on polls. This idea could be extended to having a local council dapp, where registered users can vote on local issues or have their opinions heard.
